Target recalls Pillowfort weighted blankets after sisters suffocate at Camp Lejeune - WRAL News

There are more than 200,000 Pillowfort blankets subject to the recall. That means they are in thousands of homes across the country right now.

Dr. Daniel Park, medical director at the pediatric emergency department at UNC Hospitals, says the blankets pose a risk for two reasons – the zipper and the weight of the product itself.

"Their chest walls are a lot thinner and softer and more pliable, and more susceptible to weight," Park said of children. "A lot of these blankets, you know, in proportion to their body weight, are substantial, and that can cause airway and breathing problems."

Records show that their father is a staff sergeant with 3d Battalion, 6th Marines.

Target has received two additional reports of children becoming entrapped.

Customers should stop using the blankets and contact Target for a refund.

Pillowfort Weighted Blankets weigh 6 pounds, measure 60 inches long and 40 inches wide and have a removable, waterproof, washable cover.

The blankets come in eight prints or colors. The item numbers below are printed on the fabric tag attached to the removable covers of the blankets.

  • Unicorn white, 097-02-0140
  • Space navy, 097-02-0148
  • Pink, 097-02-0361
  • Blue, 097-02-0363
  • Gray, 097-02-0364
  • Buffalo plaid red, 097-02-1603
  • Blue constellation, 097-02-3904
  • Unicorn pink, 097-02-3905

The blankets were sold from December 2018 through September 2022 for $40.

Customers can contact Target at 800-440-0680 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT daily to receive a prepaid return label to return the blankets by mail or return to any Target store.

Park feels it is important for parents to understand the risks of these products while also discussing some benefits. Research shows they’re good sensory items which can reduce anxiety.

He says he doesn’t want to fearmonger but feels families need to have all of the information before deciding to bring an item into their home.

"My approach when I'm counseling families is, let's talk about the benefits and the risks of any product," he said.
