Frozen fruit recall: Products sold at Walmart Target pose listeria risk - MarketWatch

Several types of frozen fruit sold at Walmart WMT, , Aldi, Target TGT, , Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s are being recalled over a possible bacterial contamination, the Food and Drug Administration announced this week.

The FDA warned that the food products could contain Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”

But the notice also added that, “Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.”

The voluntary recall is linked to pineapples provided by a third-party seller that were included in frozen-fruit bags sold by SunOpta Inc.’s subsidiary, Sunrise Growers Inc. The specific bags impacted in the recall, and where they were sold, can be found below:

  • Walmart: Great Value Mixed Fruit, Great Value Dark Sweet Cherries and Great Value Mango Chunks sold from Jan. 19, 2023, to June 13, 2023.
  • Whole Foods: 365 Organic Tropical Fruit Medley, 365 Organic Pineapple Chunks, 365 Pineapple Chunks, 365 Organic Whole Strawberries, 365 Organic Slice Strawberries and Bananas, and 365 Organic Blackberries from Nov. 1, 2022, to June 21, 2023.
  • Trader Joe’s: Trader Joe’s Organic Tropical Fruit Blend from March 28, 2023, to April 11, 2023.
  • Target: Good & Gather Organic Cherries and Berries Fruit Blend, Good & Gather Dark Sweet Whole Pitted Cherries, Good & Gather Mango Strawberry Blend, Good & Gather Mixed Fruit Blend, Good & Gather Mango Chunks, Good & Gather Blueberries, and Good & Gather Triple Berry Blend from Oct. 14, 2022, to May 22, 2023.
  • Aldi: Season’s Choice Tropical Blend  from Oct. 11, 2022. to May 22, 2023.
  • AWG (Associated Wholesale Grocers): Best Choice Pitted Red Tart Cherries Unsweetened from April 5, 2023, to May 4, 2023.

The FDA said that anyone concerned about having ingested listeria should contact their doctor immediately — but no recorded illnesses associated with the recall were reported as of Wednesday.

Recall codes, distribution dates and pictures of each product can also be found here.

Despite some of the recalled fruit packages not containing pineapple, such as bags of cherries or mango chunks, they are still listed by the FDA as potentially contaminated.

Earlier this year, the FDA also recalled large batches of frozen strawberries sold at Walmart, Costco COST, and HEB while investigating a Hepatitis A virus outbreak.
