MillerKnoll CEO urges workers worried about bonuses to ‘leave pity city’ - MLive.com

ZEELAND, MI — The CEO of furniture company MillerKnoll is in the spotlight after she told employees worried about not receiving bonuses to “leave pity city.”

Andi Owen, who has led the company since 2018, made the remarks in an online meeting, a portion of which has been posted on social media. It has generated scores of views and comments, and articles in publications ranging from Fortune Magazine to CBS News.

“Don’t ask about what are we going to do if we don’t get a bonus,” she said in the video clip, which appears to be a zoom-style meeting with employees. “Get the damn $26 million. Spend your time and your effort thinking about the $26 million we need and not thinking about what you’re going to do if we don’t get a bonus.”

She goes on to say: “I had an old boss who said to me one time you can visit pity city, but you can’t live there. So people leave pity city, let’s get it done.”

The video clip of Owen’s comments is about 1 minute and 20 seconds long. One account on the social media platform Twitter that posted the video showed the tweet containing the video had been viewed by 22.5 million users. The video clip was not dated.

A representative of MillerKnoll could not immediately be reached for comment.

The company was formed in 2021 after Herman Miller purchased Pennsylvania-based furniture manufacturer Knoll Inc. for $1.8 billion. Owen had served as Herman Miller’s president since 2018, and formerly served as an executive with clothing manufacturer GAP and Banana Republic, her LinkedIn page shows.

The company told Fortune Magazine “employee bonuses have not yet been determined, nor will they be until its books are closed next month,” the magazine reported.

According to Fortune, Owen received $3.9 million in incentive pay last year on top of her $1.1 million fixed salary.
