Walmart store closings 2023: See the full list - NJ.com

Walmart has set plans to shutter 20 of its stores across 12 states and Washington, D.C. in 2023.

The big-box retailer initially said it would close 15 stores, but that number has expanded to 20.

Walmart is closing four locations in Chicago in April, citing financial losses. That follows the company’s decision to close its last remaining stores in Portland, Oregon in early March.

The Portland stores were not meeting financial expectations, according to a company spokesperson. Walmart CEO Doug McMillion also said that record-breaking retail theft hurt the company’s economic performance in 2020.

Walmart also will lay off about 200 people at a New Jersey distribution center and hundreds more in Texas, California, Florida and Pennsylvania, according to a Reuters report.
